of greater importance

Two events took place in the last 24 hours that I need to address. One got decent media attention and even landed on a front page here and there. The other came and went with little media hoopla. Well, once again the media got it wrong and failed to see the more important issue.

I’ll start with the unimportant. Just in case you missed it, Microsoft released the new version of Windows today. It’s called Vista, which actually means, “a view through a narrow passage way”. This could actually be fitting when you consider how narrow the possibilities are for this new software.

This is where I begin to pound my chest and profess my love for all things Apple. You might think that this is just a fad, like Hypercolor t-shirts or Pogs. Granted, I fully recognize that Mac products are “in” right now. Come to think of it, how ironic is to think that owning the right computer is a sure way to increase your street-cred? Don’t you miss the days when all you had to do to be cool was smoke an occasional cigarette and beat up nerds? Well now the nerds, with their sleek PowerBooks, are the ones getting the chicks and the cool kids are running scared. Which is difficult in its own right due to all the cigarettes.

In all honesty, I know very little about computers. Which is exactly why I love Apple products. I know OSX is more than likely not what you are used to. You might even spend hours looking for the “start” tab. Still, I promise you it is easier to use. I have only had one issue with my iBook in the two years I have owned it. When I called Apple to report the problem, not only did I get the tech support I needed, I also made a friend. Trust me, if you are considering a new operating system, don’t buy the Vista hype. Buy a Mac.

Of greater importance, the Miss America contest was last night. “Why” you ask, “is Eric discussing the Miss America pageant?” You see, while most Americans were watching some mediocre sitcom about a dysfunctional family, Lauren Nelson was being crowned Miss America 2007. Few watched, and even fewer realize that this makes back-to-back Miss America titles for the state of Oklahoma. Nelson kept the crown in the “Sooner State” a year after Jennifer Berry, an OU student won. And speaking of Berry, while last year’s win was good for the entire state, it was especially sweet for the University of Oklahoma. Personally, OSU can have all the wrestling titles they want, I’ll take this Miss America crown. Plus, it’s easier on the eye to watch than sweaty orange singlets.

In the end regardless of which state school you pull for, I’m sure you’ll agree, I wish they all could be Oklahoma girls.

Insert eye-roll.

Nevermind, I'm not even going to get into it...
